This novel is based on an ancient story in the sacred texts about two angels who teach mankind magic.
According to the narrative: Because of the evil of humans and evil spells humans were using, the angels ask god to wipe all people from the face of the earth. God tells them that if angels were allowed on earth that they would be even worse. The angels object. So the proposal is made, god will chose 2 angels to send to earth to live among humankind. If these chosen angels on earth, like the humans, stray from god’s way they will be punished.
(The punishment is that the wrong doer will be hung by the ankles upside down in a well in Babylon until the world’s end.) Human weaknesses not found in angels are put into the earth bound angels by god.
The angels are sent to Babylon. Their task is to teach people magic that will protect humans from evil spells. They will do this work during the day and at night, by the reading a secret divine prayer they would go to heaven. Things go well until the day the angels fall in love with a woman named Zühre.
